ICMSA remind farmers of 30 October deadline for Retirement Scheme

The Chairperson of the ICMSA's Rural Development Committee, Mr. John O' Donnell, has urged farmers to ensure they submit their applications for the Early Retirement Scheme, as recently announced by Minister Smith, without delay and prior to the 30 October 2009 deadline.

Mr. O' Donnell stated that he is delighted that those farmers with applications for the Early Retirement Scheme, which were significantly progressed prior to the abrupt suspension of the scheme on October 14 2008, now have the opportunity to gain entry to the scheme. It is important to note that individuals whose applications are accompanied by a lease/deed of transfer stamped by the Revenue Commissioners prior to 14 October 2008 will be given priority.

Following months of intensive lobbying, ICMSA believes the Minister has seen the need to accommodate this group of farmers and we believe it is now vital he completes the process by providing funding for individuals in a similar situation in relation to the Installation Aid Scheme, concluded Mr. O' Donnell.

The Ballina farmer has also turned his committee's attention to the administrative costs of integrated local rural development companies. Mr O'Donnell has called on Eamon O'Cuiv, Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht affairs, to ensure that such costs are not allowed exceed 15 per
cent of their budget.

'The continued operation of these local companies is vital to the rural economy, but it is essential that the majority of the funding is directed towards sustainable projects within the community and not lost or "soaked up" by administrative costs', stated Mr O'Donnell.
